al-Hārith bin Hishām asked the Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), "O Messenger of Allāh, how does revelation come to you?" Messenger of Allāh (may the peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) replied, "Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell, and this is the hardest of all for me, and then [this state passes, and I have grasped what was said. At other times, the angel takes the form of a man and speaks to me and I grasp what he says." 'Ā'ishah said, "Indeed I saw him while revelation was being revealed to him on a very cold day, and when it passed, his forehead was dripping with sweat."
